Women who experience sleep apnea during pregnancy may face an increased of risk of health problems, for both themselves and their newborns, a new study suggests.

In the study, babies born to women with obstructive sleep apnea were more likely to be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit than babies born to women without the condition. All of the women in the study were obese.

In addition, the women with sleep apnea were more likely to develop preeclampsia, a condition of high blood pressure during pregnancy, and to deliver their babies by cesarean section.

Pregnancy complications linked to obesity — such as high blood pressure and gestational diabetes — are better understood than sleep apnea, which is an understudied and under-diagnosed condition in pregnant women, the researchers said.

There is a need for better ways to screen and treat sleep apnea in pregnancy, said study researcher Dr. Judette Louis, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of South Florida.

People with sleep apnea experience pauses in their breathing during sleep. With obstructive sleep apnea, the pauses are due to a blocked airway. Obesity increases the risk for obstructive sleep apnea because the extra fat tissue can narrow in the inside of the windpipe, according to the National Heart and Blood Institute.

In the new study, the researchers analyzed information from 175 obese pregnant women who were tested for obstructive sleep apnea at home using a portable device.

About 15 percent of participants had obstructive sleep apnea. Those with sleep apnea were more likely to be heavier, and have chronic high blood pressure than those without sleep apnea.

Among those with sleep apnea, about 65 percent required a C-section, while 33 percent of those without the condition required the surgery. Additionally, 42 percent of those with sleep apnea had preeclampsia, compared with 17 percent of those without sleep apnea. The rate of premature births was similar between the groups.

The percentage of newborns requiring admission to the NICU was 46 percent for mothers with sleep apnea, compared with 18 percent for those without sleep apnea. Many of these admissions were due to breathing problems.

The higher rate of NICU admissions for infants born to mothers with sleep apnea may be due to the higher rate of C-sections in this group, the researchers said.

The best way to reduce the risks that come with obesity-related sleep apnea would be to treat obesity before a woman becomes pregnant, although losing weight is often difficult, the researchers said.

Because the study only included obese women, it’s not clear whether sleep apnea could have the same effects in women who are not obese.

The study was published online Sept. 20 in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.

PRESCHOOLERS who habitually snore may be at greater risk of behavioral problems than other children their age, according to a US study.

Researchers, who results appeared in the journal Pediatrics, found that two- and three-year olds who snored loudly at least a couple of times per week tended to have more problems with inattention and hyperactivity.

More than one-third of those “persistent” snorers were considered to be at least at risk of a behavioral disorder, like attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

That compared with 10 to 12% of their peers who either did not snore or had shorter-lived problems, said researchers led by Dean Beebe, of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

The findings do not prove that the breathing problems directly lead to behavioral problems or that treating the underlying cause of snoring can improve children’s behavior.

“Kids are going to snore sometimes, especially when they have a cold,” Beebe said in an interview. “It’s when the snoring persists that it gets concerning.”

He added that chronic, loud snoring “should be on parents’ radar, and it’s something they should bring up to their pediatrician.”

The study adds to others that have linked children’s behavior to so-called sleep-disordered breathing — when kids chronically snore, mouth-breathe or seem to stop breathing for several seconds at a time as they sleep, also called apnea.

For the study, 249 children were followed from birth to age three. Overall, 9% were considered persistent snorers based on parents’ reports. That meant they’d snored loudly at least twice a week at the ages of both two and three.

Another 23% were “transient” snorers, meaning they’d snored at least twice a week at either age two or three but not both. The rest of the children, 68%, were considered non-snorers.

Overall, 35% of the persistent snorers scored high enough on a standard questionnaire to at least be considered “at risk” of a behavioral disorder, though that didn’t mean they had one.

“It isn’t necessarily diagnostic, but they’re showing more problems than is typical,” Beebe said.

There are reasons to believe that sleep-disordered breathing would affect children’s behavior. One reason is that poor sleep quality could make them tired and more easily frustrated.

Based on animal research, it’s possible that when apnea causes oxygen levels to go down repeatedly overnight, there might effects on the brain circuitry.

Beebe’s team accounted for family income, children’s exposure to cigarette smoke and certain other factors, and the snoring-behavior link still held. Although, Beebe said it’s always possible that there are other explanations.

For now, he recommended that parents be aware that persistent snoring is “not normal” and is something they should tell their pediatrician about. — Reuters

NEW YORK (CBS NEWS) - Sleep apnea is a problem that goes well beyond annoying your partner with loud snoring. Research is showing it can raise risk for heart attacks, stroke and diabetes. Now, a new study finds it can make a person five times more likely to die from cancer.

For the study, which will be published in an upcoming issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, researchers collaborated with Spanish scientists to examine 22-year mortality data on 1,522 people enrolled in a long-running “Wisconsin Sleep Cohort” study. The data looked at Washington state employees since 1989.

Every four years, the subjects underwent overnight sleep studies, including a polysomnography – an all-night recording of sleep and breathing. The researchers determined – after accounting for other risk factors like smoking and obesity – that people with severe sleep apnea were 4.8 times more likely to die from cancer. The association was stronger among non-obese subjects, compared with obese ones.

The study was a collaboration with other research from the University of Barcelona, that found inadequate oxygen – which is indicative of sleep apnea and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) – could increase tumor growth in mice. Like the human study, the effect was stronger in lean mice, compared with obese ones.

“Clearly, there is a correlation, and we are a long way from proving that sleep apnea causes cancer or contributes to its growth,” study author Dr. F. Javier Nieto, chair of the department of population health sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, said in a news release. “But animal studies have shown that the intermittent hypoxia (an inadequate supply of oxygen) that characterizes sleep apnea promotes angiogenesis–increased vascular growth–and tumor growth. Our results suggest that SDB is also associated with an increased risk of cancer mortality in humans.”

About 28 million Americans have sleep apnea, The New York Times reported, but many cases go undiagnosed.

Snoring is one of the common issue that many people are facing, it is due to the blockage of air passages during sleep. It is not only affected your relationship with your partner, it may also be a symptom of more serious health issue. There are many factor contributed to snoring, obesity, aging, alcohol, eat right before bedtime are some of them. According to the research, snoring is more common in adult males than women. Now, lets explore what are the effects of snoring.

Sleep Apnea – Snoring always links to sleep apnea, both conditions can be relateed to an excess of tissue which created the blockage to the air flow at the back of the throat. When snoring causes sleep apnea, it can lead to a very serious situation, including several diseases. When sleep apnea happens, it will cause cessation of breathing for short periods and it will last for more than 10 seconds for each. Sleep apnea will lower the oxygen level in our blood and blood pressure may rise with continuous sleep apnea.

Relationship stress – The noise of snoring will directly affect the relationship with your partner. If your partner cannot sleep due to the snoring noise, the relationship may become more difficult. While you are having a good night sleep, your partner probably has to wake up over and over due to your loud snoring noice.

Sleep deprivation – Snoring will affect sleeping quality, continuous snoring may lead to sleep deprivation that can even affect your quality of life. It may increase your stress level, affect your mood and sexuality.

Demotivation for exercise – Snoring will gets someone exhausted, and does not have additional energy for exercise. Long term, snoring may decrease an overall health condition.

Focus on tasks – Sleep deprivation will cause someone to have difficulty to stay focused. It will affect our daily performance and it might be dangerous while performing daily tasks, driving for example. Besides, it will decrease our productivity as we are unable to focus on our job.

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 9, 2012 — /PRNewswire/ — Eos Sleep, the nation’s foremost medical practice for diagnosing and treating the many causes of sleep apnea, sinusitis and nasal obstruction, is proud to announce the opening of its newest center, Eos Sleep of San Francisco,CA. Led by founder and Medical Director Dr. David Volpi, Eos Sleep aims to deliver successful treatment of problems ranging from daytime headaches, irritability, and poor-concentration caused by snoring-interrupted sleep, to the more serious – and even life-threatening – health issues caused by severe obstructive sleep apnea.

Realizing that there is a real need for accurate information, diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Volpi founded Eos Sleep to be a place where snoring patients can go for total expert treatment. With 30 million Americans affected with sleep apnea, and it being one of the top three undiagnosed diseases in the country, there is a great need for these treatment centers where patients can be evaluated and treated to avoid serious health risks.

“Everyday patients from across the country contact us to seek our treatments in their area and we are excited to bring our innovative and efficacious treatments to the West Coast,” explained David Volpi, M.D., Director of Eos Sleep. “Our mission and vision are built upon educating the public about the potential severity of snoring as it can be a symptom of serious medical conditions, including sleep apnea which can lead to strokes, high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms, and when untreated, can even shorten one’s lifespan.”

Eos Sleep is proud to have Dr. Matthew Mingrone, former Medical Director and President of Sereno, The Center For Snoring Solutions, to help spearhead the westward expansion. “I am happy to be partnering with such a skilled group of physicians who are passionate about patients getting a proper night’s sleep and improving the lives of those who snore or have sleep apnea,” says Dr. Mingrone. ” I am looking forward to continuing to provide the best care and treatment options available here in San Francisco.”

The new center offers the most innovative, state-of-the-art procedures available to provide effective treatments for patients with mild to severe sleep disorders. Although most patients benefit from a minimally invasive in-office approach, Eos Sleep physicians consider all options before recommending patient-specific treatment. The specialists believe that there is no one-size-fits-all approach, and recommendations are driven by a medical diagnosis unique to the patient, and only after careful consideration by the staff of board-certified medical doctors.

Eos Sleep, which will unveil new locations throughout the year, will provide patients with the opportunity to receive the latest minimally invasive in-office techniques to treat snoring, sleep apnea, sinusitis and nasal obstruction. Dr. Volpi and his ENT physicians work to continuously seek the most progressive and innovative treatments and remains a center of excellence.

The new center is located at Crocker Galleria 50 Post Street, Suite 6 San Francisco, CA 94104. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (888) 789-8781.

David Volpi, M.D., P.C., F.A.C.S. has had a private Ear, Nose and Throat practice in New York, NY for more than twenty years and is a staff member at New York’s finest teaching hospitals. As an otolaryngology surgeon, David Volpi, M.D. realized that there is a lack of information on the part of the public about the potential severity of snoring. With the need for accurate information, diagnosis and treatment so necessary, he founded Eos Sleep, formerly Manhattan Snoring and Sleep Center to be a place where snoring patients can go for total, expert treatment — and he created this site to be a thorough information resource for the education of snoring sufferers throughout the world. www.EosSleep.com

Snoring is a major issue that many people have to deal with, and those that have a spouse or a loved one will testify to the complications that are associated with snoring. Those that are overweight can sometimes end up getting the bulk of the problems associated with this malady. Snoring can cause stress, and breathing issues that can even lead to death if coupled with apnea. There are some things that you can do in these modern times to shift the tide in your favor, and it’s not always something that is difficult to accomplish.

The first thing that you’ll want to understand is that exercise can help you stop from snoring, and it’s not difficult. Before we dive into why this is effective, it’s important to first understand what causes snoring. The problem can sometimes be isolated to the throat and the tissue that is in the area. For those that are overweight, the fatty cells around the throat and vocal areas can constrict to the point where breathing is compromised and a person snores. In order to change this for easier breathing, a person can exercise and receive great benefits.

The reason why people enjoy changing things up with exercise is because the cells start to decrease with weight loss. Weight loss in the area of the throat and vocals can be beneficial for the long term in many ways. The results take time, but they will manifest and introduce a person to a healthy night’s sleep and even conquer apnea in many cases.

Aside from losing weight, the reason why many people stop from snoring with exercise, is because breathing patterns shift and a person can have clear passages through the esophageal lining. The nose also becomes clear and easy to flow through for oxygen, which his why many are finding that the key to conquering sleep apnea and snoring is found with moving into action.

To accelerate the weight loss, it’s important to eat right and combine exercise to move ahead of the curve. With proper care, anyone can enjoy a good night’s sleep and stop from snoring which makes loud noises at night. Skeptics are turned into believes within weeks of starting a good workout regimen, and not only does sleep get better but those that are looking to lower cholesterol, and get fit, will find the matter to be amazing as well. Try it, and you too will see results swiftly.

When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, you have to look into fixing any problems that’s associated with snoring. Snoring can not only be a nuisance for the person that’s causing all the ruckus, but also for a loved one that has to be in the same room trying to get some shut eye. There are a variety of things that can help ease the throat muscles, and cause a good night sleep to be easier than ever, and it’s a matter of looking into the following different options.

• Position – The first thing that you’ll want to look into is what position you’re sleeping in. If you notice that you snore more on your back, try your side, and if that’s not an issue, then you’ll have to figure something out in regards to what position will work best for your needs. Try different options until you find something that works for you.

• Lose Weight – The second option that most people will not want to hear is weight loss. Those that have started to exercise and see results in terms of weight loss, will most likely manifest less snoring than ever before. It’s going to be tough at first, but it’s a great thing to consider, especially since it can help in more ways than one.

• Alcohol – Do not drink too much, and do not drink alcohol within a few hours of going to sleep. This will cause snoring, and will force the body to struggle with breathing properly at night. Avoid caffeine as well as that will not help matters either.

• Breathing Strips – Over the counter breathing strips can help you get a good night’s sleep by opening up the nasal passages with relative ease. These help those that are having issues with snoring and the culprit is the nasal passage.

• Extreme Measures – If all else fails, it might be a good idea to look into surgical options. Surgery is something that should be taken as a last resort and something that should be thoroughly thought through. Do not take this decision lightly as it will be a serious thing to consider. Consult a physician for information on this remedy.

The above are just a sampling of the most common remedies that help people dealing with issues of snoring and sleep deprivation. You won’t believe the results until you try them, so give them a good go ahead, and you’ll enjoy greatness moving forward.

SYDNEY: A gruelling boot camp and a cure for her husband’s snoring have put China’s Li Na back on track before the Australian Open, where she is among the favourites as she seeks a second Grand Slam crown.

The rejuvenated Li has been in eye-catching form in this year’s early exchanges, winning all three of her Hopman Cup singles matches and reaching the semifinals of the Sydney International, where she is defending champion.

The victories are stoking expectations of another successful run at the Australian Open, where Li lost in the final last year before making history as Asia’s first Slam winner at the French Open.

Fifth-ranked Li leads a strong Chinese contingent to Melbourne, after Zheng Jie claimed this month’s Auckland Classic title — albeit when Flavia Pennetta retired from the final — and with Peng Shuai into the top 20.

Li, who turns 30 next month, fell into a deep slump after Roland Garros but she says the reasons for her revival are simple: intense training, and better sleep after her coach and husband, Jiang Shan, lost weight to curb his snoring.

“I say, ‘If you put on more weight, you’re divorced’, so he change!” Li said, according to Australia’s Fairfax media group. “He’s getting better and better (because) he’s losing the weight.”

Li constantly joked about Jiang’s noisy nocturnal habits last year at Melbourne, complaining his buzz-saw snoring woke her up every hour before her semifinal with Caroline Wozniacki.

Feisty, tattooed Li sidelined Jiang as coach in favour of Michael Mortensen for the French Open, but has now returned to the tutelage of her husband, the long-time mentor with whom she has forged her unconventional career.

Li battled hard with Chinese authorities to let her train with Jiang, breaking away from the state system, and was rewarded with the Roland Garros win which immediately transformed her into one of the country’s biggest stars.

She admitted the distractions of fame, including public appearances and a bronze statue in her home city of Wuhan, affected the rest of her season as she won only one match at Wimbledon and was a first-round casualty at the US Open.

But Li said a four-week training camp in Munich had left her refreshed and reinvigorated as she seeks to add more grand slam titles before age rules her out as a top contender.

“After winter training I was feeling better for the season,” she told reporters in Perth, where the Hopman Cup is held. “After the French Open I didn’t do well.

“I had four weeks (in Munich), no photo shoots, no interviews, just very tough training… mostly for fitness. I want to keep healthy for the whole season. I am not young any more and do not have time to waste,” she said.

“I have to focus on every tournament and every second and that is why I stayed in Munich for such a long time.”

Li’s success is pennies from heaven for the Open, styled “The Grand Slam of Asia-Pacific”, with organisers stepping up marketing operations in China and reportedly hoping to attract 200 million TV viewers in the country.

The Australian Open trophies toured China — their first pre-tournament visit to a foreign country — in October, and last month Li hosted an exhibition tournament in her home city of Wuhan.

According to Fairfax, ticket sales through tour operators in China are up 30 percent on last year, and the number of Chinese journalists covering the Open has more than doubled.

“This is an important future market for us,” tournament director Craig Tiley was quoted as saying. “Our objective is to bring over as many people from the Asia-Pacific region during that time of year, so they can spend money.”

Pint-sized Zheng had not won for six years until she took the Auckland title, and the 28-year-old will be hoping for a strong campaign after reaching the 2010 Open semi-finals, equalling her best grand slam result.

Fellow Chinese Peng, 26, reached the fourth round at last year’s Australian Open, a feat she repeated at Wimbledon and the US Open to achieve a career-high year-end ranking of 17.

Many people are looking for ways to stop from snoring, and get a full night’s sleep. Many don’t realize how easy it is to move forward with different options, getting focused and rising above the malady and issues that are associated with this sleep depriving option. For some, pills, apnea machines, and other resources just don’t seem to cut it, which is why many look into getting an oral device that will help in a greater capacity than many other options. If you have been on the fence in regards to picking a solution based on any oral device that is available to the general public, consider looking at how effective they can be.

Before you can truly understand whether or not an apparatus that is placed in the mouth, is something worth investing money into, it’s appropriate to understand how they work. They work in a variety of ways, most importantly moving the jaw to have an open pathway for air to come through. Often times, the sound that you hear when someone is snoring is due in large part to the vibrations that are made in the throat area. The tissues have air passing through that can be problematic in many ways.

Effective oral devices come in a variety of different options, and most often can be molded individually to fit the needs of the consumer. If you are suffering from not getting enough sleep or you have a loved one that can’t sleep because of your snoring, it’s important to look into an oral device.

Among other options, not just mouthpieces, there are some devices that can be placed within the mouth to help the passage ways get clearer. These options are often times prescribed by a specialist, and will require testing to see how bad the snoring and apnea can be.

Not every one will see results in a positive manner. Some will find that the issues associated with sleep can be shifted with other products, but in terms of oral devices, results vary. Much like prescription medications, drinks, and many other stop snoring options, you’ll have to look into what works best for your overall needs, and that’s hard to determine without a little trial and error. A good portion of the population will see a positive outcome. Look into a variety of different options before settling on anything, and if one option doesn’t work, don’t lose hope, as there are many things you can do to make things better at night.

If you are suffering from snoring and looking a way to stop from snoring, you have to understand what causes the snoring, it will help to you find relief easier. Many partner and family members are the victim in this noisy night time dilemma, but the snorer does not aware that they have the condition. Many are being told by partner and desperately seeking a solution to cure snoring.

Just like most other conditions, snoring can be prevented if you know how. If you or you know someone is showing the initial symptom of developing this condition, you can find some useful advises which may stop snoring from developing.

What causes the snore ? It is not a mystery. Snoring occurs when the collapsible part of the throat meets. Coupled with the passage of air flow into the the throat, these dangling parts are most likely to generate vibrations that procude the noisy sounds.

We know that we breathe 24 hours a day, but we only snore when we are sleeping, where our body is totally absolutely relaxed. Thus, it is always advised that snorers to mantain a tensed sleeping position until the body gets used to its situation.

However, if you do not like that way. You can try to having a sideward sleeping position to prevent snoring. This position will help to widen the passage through which air can pass through easily. This passage will be pressed and congested when we sleep on our backs. With this position, our lower jaw is tends to open, and thus creating a room where the tongue can droop back. When this happens, the regular air passage will likely be obstructed by these components.

When a passage is narrow, the pressure that regularly runs through it will going up. This concept happens in our throat which indicate why you will find people who snore and who don’t, and it explain why snores can be found in different sounds and intensity.

Heavier folks are having higher chance to snore due to their extra tissues. An overweight person’s neck is known to have more muscles and adipose tissues that hamper the regular breathing. Thus in order to stop from snoring, one is advised to cut down his weight. You will not only escape from significant health disease or coronary illnesses, you can even preserve yourself from distracting your sleeping partner’s sleep.

Some of us practice mouth breathing while sleeping. This is normally not a good and healthy practice, mouth breathing can also raise someone’s susceptibility towards snoring. It may appear awkward to change back to nasal breathing initially even though, but in time, you would probably try to breath with your nose during sleeping.

Most advises in stopping snore are targeting lifestyle or environmental changing practices. This is due to snoring doesn’t have to root from biological causes even though we might discover snoring sufferers who are really disturbed by nasal deformities or additional large adenoids and tonsils.
